I have a photography bucket list. It consists of people and places I really want to photograph before I die. Last week I got to cross one of these places off of my list!
I have been wanting to shoot at sand dunes for years, but in Colorado it was never really an option. So I was very pleasantly surprised when I found out that the Bruneau Sand Dunes were a little over an hour away from my home in Boise.
After securing a permit to shoot there, I found a model and began styling the shoot. Of course, the fabulous Faith Forest agreed to come on for hair and makeup and our model Tanisha was perfect for the look we wanted. I was psyched!
That began to wane a little though after arriving at the Dunes and discovering it was 98 degrees out and the mosquitos were out of control! At one point I think we walked straight into their den, because we all got attacked.
After the sand cooled down enough that we could walk on it without burning our feet, we were able to exceed my vision for the shoot and get some absolutely gorgeous images. The light and the sunset could not have been more beautiful. In fact, we left the Dunes and the sunset was so amazing that we pulled over on the side of the road for a few more shots.
I haven’t shot outside in almost a year, so this was the perfect way to get back into the swing of it.
I cannot thank my model Tanisha enough for being a trooper in that heat, my makeup artist Faith for being on top of her game as always, my husband Evan for filming a video even though his camera overheated several times and my fellow photographer Paula of Soft Elegance Photography for shooting with me!
If you’re in the Boise area and want to plan a shoot at the Dunes, send my studio manager an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Would love to make some more magic there!
